Opportunity for an arts and culture center in Wayland

Wayland is in the process of considering a new library. A significant grant has been obtained from the state for a new library to be located near the Wayland Middle School. Voters will decide in April 2018 at town meeting. If approved, the process of building the new library will begin.

If this occurs, could the historic library building at 5 Concord Road become the Wayland Cultural Center?

The Arts Wayland board of directors supports this idea of a cultural center as does the Wayland Historic Commission and Wayland Archaeology Group.

Arts Wayland, as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with a 38 year history in the town, hopes to play a role in making this vision a reality. Arts Wayland members, and artists from all local towns are invited to comment below and share your thoughts and ideas for such an opportunity.

The library building at 5 Concord road could house display areas for art, historical objects, and archaeological artifacts, of which the Wayland Historical Commission maintains a large collection. Flexible seating could allow for concerts, lectures, dramatic presentations, poetry slams, and a cafe.  The large spaces could be used for special exhibitions and presentations.  The lower level could be used for activity classrooms and for storage of historical artifacts not currently on display.

If 5 Concord Road were to become available, it could become a cultural asset that would enrich the lives of everyone in the town.
